2021 LEAD Society Teach Ag! Essay Contest - Finalist Annoucement

The time has come to announce the four finalists for the 2021 LEAD Society Teach Ag! Essay Contest! These "final four" participants will be recognized during the in-person session at the annual Pennsylvania FFA State Convention. This year, we had twelve participants, representing five schools from across the state of Pennsylvania.

Participants were able to step into the role of an agriculture teacher for a day and instruct a class on a topic of their choosing. Following the 2021 contest theme,
"INSPIRE", students were asked to include in their lessons a connection to how agricultural education can be used to create passion and interest in the agriculture industry. After their teaching experience, participants were then asked to write a 400-600 word essay on the prompt "How can agricultural education be used to inspire students about the future of agriculture?" as well as a 300-word reflection of their teaching experience. Students also submitted their lesson plans and a video from their teaching experience that were included as part of the competition evaluation process.

We are proud of this contest and its ability to allow students to experience what it is like to be an agricultural educator. Each participant (and their designated advisor for this contest!) will receive a LEAD Society Teach Ag! Essay Contest T-shirt.

Our four finalists will be receiving gift cards for the National FFA Shop and the first place winner will receive free registration to a 2021 FFA event of their choosing!

Recap: Penn State and the 2018 Big E!

Pennsylvania FFA members proudly display the Sweepstakes Banner, awarded to
the state with the collective score of CDE's and LDE's for the weekend.
The sweepstakes was a tie between Ohio and Pennsylvania this year.
This past weekend our Penn State students traveled to Massachusetts with The LEAD Society at Penn State to be a part of the Eastern States Exposition, referred to as The Big E. This on from September 14th to the 30th. During the first weekend of The Big E, FFA members from all over the Eastern Region travel to the fairgrounds to compete in Career Development Events and Leadership Development Events (CDEs and LDEs respectively). Almost 900 students from 20 different states make an appearance at the fair. For some of them, this is an opportunity to hone their skills before competing at National Convention. For others, it's just another chance to engage with FFA members from across the Nation and enjoy the fair's atmosphere.

Justin says he enjoyed seeing
extemporaneous pubic speaking
now as a judge instead of a participant.
Every year Penn State students travel to the Big E to help run the CDEs and LDEs that are held throughout the weekend. Through this unique opportunity, our students get hands-on experience facilitating a wide variety of events and get to practice giving constructive feedback to FFA members that compete. Our students assisted in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Veterinary Sciences, Poultry Evaluation, and Environment & Natural Resources competitions.

Justin Kurtz, current member of #psuaged22 was one of three Penn Staters who served as judges for the Extemporaneous Speaking competition held Friday afternoon. He comments, "Today was great. Honestly, the favorite part of today was seeing a demonstration of growth by youth in agriculture while judging the extemporaneous speaking competition; the power you have as a authoritative role to make a positive impact on someone else's life."

The Big E was a great opportunity for our members to gain experience in facilitation and delivering constructive feedback. Especially for our Agricultural and Extension Education majors, these are areas that they'll be working in for the rest of their careers. For those students not heading off to be an Agricultural teacher the experiences of this past weekend were equally important. Libby Baker-Mikesell, a Plant Science major, is aspiring to be an environmental educator with a focus in soil and water conservation. Libby was facilitating and grading the soil science portion of the Environment & Natural Resources CDE and served as a judge for Extemporaneous Public Speaking. She says that, "..being able to judge CDEs like extemporaneous public speaking and environment and natural resources allowed me to gain a better understanding of the knowledge base present in today's youth while reinforcing the importance of hands-on experiential learning".
Some of our Extemporaneous Public Speaking facilitators
and judges that helped with the event.
The weekend was topped off at the awards banquet on Saturday night, where we got to hear from Erica Baier, National FFA Secretary, as she delivered her keynote speech about her experience in high school FFA and the importance of persistence that she learned after competing in her own CDEs. The winners of the CDEs and LDEs were announced, as was the presentation of the Sweepstakes Banner, awarded to the state that collectively had the highest ranking in all competitions over the course of the weekend.

This year the sweepstakes winner was a tie between Pennsylvania and Ohio (oh no!), but as you can see in the first image, we go our share of the prize and a pretty great picture! Thomas Gabel, another member of #psuaged22, sums up the weekend perfectly:

"...nothing is better than students being recognized for their successes and it was great to help facilitate an environment in which they could compete and achieve success and growth."

What a great weekend for our LEAD Society members!

The 89th Pennsylvania FFA State Convention

FFA members work on assembling an arrangement during the Floriculture CDE.
The 89th Pennsylvania FFA State Convention and Activities Week was held at Penn State University from June 11th through the 14th. Throughout the week, Pennsylvania FFA members attended the convention to compete in various Career Development Events and Leadership Development Events (CDE's and LDE's), discuss delegate issues, and interview and select the new 2018 - 2019 Pennsylvania FFA Officer Team.

Penn State Teach Ag was well-represented as the Teach Ag! Avengers ran two different workshops for FFA members during the week, a new addition to the programming at State Convention. These workshops were titled, "Exploring Careers in Agriculture" and "Promoting Your Chapter Through Digital Storytelling; with each workshop respectively aimed at allowing students to explore their own career path and utilizing digital media to help build the stories of their own FFA chapters. Many of our upcoming student teachers took this opportunity to spend the week with their soon-to-be cooperating programs as well.

Trey Elizondo with the Nittany Lion Shrine.
We had the honor of having a past National Officer as a guest and keynote speaker during State Convention, Mr. Trey Elizondo. Last year he served as the National Western Region Vice President. He spent the week with PA FFA members, visited CDE's, took a tour of campus, and spent some time with Penn State AEE students. His keynote address inspired FFA members to let the fear in their lives take the back seat in order for them achieve their goals and have the unique experiences afforded to them.

Student success is always an incredible thing to see, and this year was no exception. Awards were given for CDE's and LDE's, special recognition and thanks given to those who make the Pennsylvania FFA and State Convention possible, and students at Penn State were able to recognize those who took the steps to fill the shoes of their own agricultural teachers for a day with the Teach Ag! Essay Contest ran by LEAD Society at Penn State.

Samuel Loy (Right), and his brother Andy Loy (Left).
We are very proud to announce that one of our own members of Penn State Teach Ag, Samuel Loy, was selected to serve as the 2018 - 2019 State Reporter. Under his new duty he will be representing and serving almost 13,000 FFA members across the Commonwealth.

Sam comes from the Greenwood FFA Chapter in Millerstown, Pennsylvania, where has was a high school FFA member and eventual president of the Greenwood chapter in the 2016 - 2017 year. He started at Penn State this past year, majoring in Agricultural and Extension Education, also serving as a member of the Teach Ag! Avengers and a brother of Alpha Zeta. He said what he is most excited for is to, "get the opportunity to impact students the same way state officers have impacted me". He's looking forward to all the new people he'll be able to meet, and he's already excited to be at the ACES conference in the spring. We are all beyond proud of him as he begins his journey as a state officer and dedicates himself to a year of service to Pennsylvania FFA members.

The new 2018 -2019 State Officer team is as follows (From L to R):

Treasurer: Abigail Yoder from Central Columbia
Chaplain: Millena Bashore from Northern Lebanon
Reporter: Samuel Loy from Greenwood
Vice President: Jacob Kinzer from East Juniata
Sentinal: Roarke Miller from Little Dutchmen
President: Jenna Harnish from Athens
Secretary: Morgan Bear from Big Spring

We wish them all luck as they dedicate the next year of their lives to the service of FFA members across the Commonwealth!

The Annual Teach Ag Essay Contest!

"Explore" is the theme for 2018's Teach Ag Essay Contest,
ran by the LEAD Society of Penn State.
Are you a current student, or do you know of current students enrolled in a secondary agricultural education class?

Take a chance to explore a career in Ag Education!

The Essay Contest was created by former Penn State Teach Ag! Society members and is now run by the new LEAD Society of Penn State to promote an awareness of the national shortage of agriculture educators. The contest provides secondary level students who are involved in agriculture education classes an opportunity to teach a class in their agricultural education departments. After teaching, the students write a brief essay summarizing their experience.
Participants submit applications and compete with others to win prizes. This contest has the potential to spark the interest of secondary agricultural students to teach and become agriculture educators. The Teach Ag Essay Contest encompasses the motto of the National FFA Organization by providing students with a chance to develop their leadership skills, their personal growth, and develop opportunities for career success within the field of agriculture.

Here's how it works:

Students create and teach a lesson in an agricultural class addressing any topic they have an interest in. They will then write an essay reflecting on their experiences and answering the following two questions:

1. Why teach Ag?
2. What did you learn in your day as an Ag teacher?

Additionally, students are encouraged to submit an optional YouTube video about either why they want to be an Ag teacher, or why they love their Ag teacher. (The video should not exceed 2 minutes). Feel free to post the video on your personal social media, and tag us on Facebook (@PennStateLEADSociety). The submission of a video will add a 10% bonus to your overall score.

How to submit:

Complete the online entry form including the following things:

1. Your essay
2. Your lesson plan
3. A photo of you teaching
4. A photo of you and your Ag teacher
5. A photo release form
6. (Optional) A YouTube link to your video

The deadline for entry is 11:59 PM on Friday, April 13th.

Winners and Prizes!

The "Final Four" students will be announced by May and their placings will be announced at the PA FFA State Convention in June.

Every participant will receive a Teach Ag t-shirt and an invitation to an ice cream social at the State Convention. The "Final Four" will win the following additional prizes:

First Place
$100 National FFA gift card
Free registration to any 2018 PA FFA event
