National Teach Ag! Day Recap #tagged15 #hookedonpsuaged

On September 24^th we celebrated National Teach Ag! Day with a lot of fun events! We hosted Dave Burgess, had a one on one workshop session with Dave, and also was able to tune in to the live stream hosted by the National Teach Ag! Campaign. Let’s break down the day a little:

Dave Burgess Keynote:

Dave Burgess spoke in the HUB Robeson Center and delivered a one of a kind message to the university. Staff members, students, and even some alumni came to listen in! His energetic message and delivery of his speech made everyone in the audience truly think about how they can change up their classrooms, meetings or any day to day activity and make it better! At the end of the Keynote, Dave Burgess was kind enough to sign books for the audience members and take a couple of pictures as well!

After the Keynote concluded, cooperating teachers and the AEE seniors were able to go to a different classroom and begin a one on one teacher workshop session with Dave. He brought more of his examples that he uses in the classroom and how he gets his students fired up to learn about the lesson of that day. After it concluded, teachers and students alike were all excited to go back to the classroom and implement the new strategies they learned.

National Live Stream

Due to technical difficulties, our live stream was not able to make it on the big screen down in Washington D.C.! We look forward to other opportunities in the future and partnering with the National Teach Ag! Campaign.

Overall it was a great day filled with lots of learning and working with our Ag Ed Family! We look forward to many more National Teach Ag! Days and inviting new people to collaborate with the Penn State Ag Ed Majors!

Words of Wisdom Wednesday: Dave Burgess #WOWW

Dave Burgess author of Teach Like a PIRATE

Tomorrow is the day. The day that will change lives of the Agriculture Education students, cooperating teachers of the 2016 student teacher candidates, and of course anyone at the University who gets to experience the one and only educational pirate, Dave Burgess.

Dave Burgess is delivering inspirational messages to Penn State students on National Teach Ag! Day which is tomorrow, September 24^th! How did Dave Burgess become a Pirate you may ask? Well that is simple! Dave wrote a New York Times best-selling author of Teach Like a PIRATE and is a co-author of P is for PIRATE: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators. In regards to his book, Teach Like a PIRATE, it has sparked a full‐scale revolution in the educational world and has inspired teachers from all over the globe to achieve new levels of excellence in their schools and classrooms.

 Due to his hard work and different styles of teaching, he has been recognized as a 2014 BAMMY Award for Secondary School Teacher of the Year which was presented by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences. Other awards include, award-winning teacher of the Year from San Diego, California, recognized as Teacher of the Year, is a Golden Apple recipient and has been a faculty standout for 17 consecutive years! As you can tell by all of his awards, Dave Burgess has been a role model in the teaching industry.

Tomorrow on National Teach Ag! Day, Dave will be presenting an inspirational work session in the Freeman Auditorium located in the HUB- Robeson Center from 8:30 to 10AM and you can purchase his book and even get it signed by him! Following this presentation Dave will also be doing a workshop session with the 2016 Student Teacher Candidates and their Cooperating Teachers! Please come out and enjoy his innovative work session tomorrow! See you there!

September 25th was National Teach Ag Day and Penn State participated in numerous ways. It was an exciting and busy day so in case you missed any thing here are the top ten things that happened at Penn State!

10. Our social media presence was strong with tons of tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts!

9. Our viewing party of the live webcast was a hit with many Penn State students there to check it out!

8. We entered the National Collegiate photo contest!

7. We shared many "Why Ag Ed?" videos across various social media platforms that featured Penn State students, PA FFA members and Agriculture educators.


6. Our faculty breakfast in appreciation of the professors at Penn State was a huge success!

5. We sent over 100 Thank You cards to Agriculture educators all across the state!

4. Our YouTube video in celebration of National Teach Ag Day received over 175 views that day!


3. We had many big name companies follow us on twitter including PA Farm Bureau and New Holland!


2. Our very own Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg stopped by the Teach Ag popcorn
stand!

1. Ellen Thompson summed it up best went she gave us a shout out on the National Live Stream of the days events. She stated "They do things big there at Penn State!"

National Teach Ag Day! #teachag #taglive14

Did you know that September 25^th is National Teach Ag Day?! Teachers and students alike will be celebrating school based agricultural education and to help spread awareness about what great opportunities and careers are involved in agriculture! 

Penn State is putting our own spin on this day! The Teach Ag! Society officers and the Teach Ag! Avengers have worked hard to make sure that we spread awareness and of course make it fun for Penn State students and the Penn State professors in the agriculture college.

 Some activities that you will see on September 25th are below! 

A faculty breakfast will be served in 214 Ferguson Building from 8AM to 11AM. 

 We have entered into the Teach Ag Day Collegiate Picture Contest with this picture:

We will be participating in the Live Webcast from 1-3 PM making our presence known through our social media! If you would like to join, please meet us in Ferguson Building Room 213 and don't forget to bring a form of technology so you can join in the conversation! If you cannot make these times don't worry! If you click on this link, you can tweet to jump in by using the hashtag 'taglive14' and direct it towards @Teach_Ag !

The Teach Ag! Avengers will also be serving popcorn promoting this day on the Creamery lawn starting at 11 AM! 

Let’s all come together as Nittany Lions, and celebrate this day together! Just think, without our agriculture teachers, Penn State would not be formally known as the Farmers High School!

Teach Ag! Society: Brand New Spirit!

Teach Ag! Society, a newly formed club at the Pennsylvania State University, has kicked started the new year with a bang! With big events such as the Welcome Back Picnic and celebrating National Teach Ag Day on the 26^th of September, they are really making a splash in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Teach Ag! Society was formed as a branch of the Alpha Tau Alpha, an honorary professional agricultural fraternity. In order to be a member of Alpha Tau Alpha, a student must be in their junior year and have a GPA above a 3.0. This greatly limited the number of students that could be involved in the club. Since students could only be full members for two semesters, Teach Ag! Society was born to solve the problem of the rapid turnover rate.

Teach Ag! Society is open to all majors and focuses on students interested in promoting and teaching agriculture. They participate in the Alpha Tau Alpha Conclave at National FFA Convention where students get to show off their knowledge in Quiz Bowl, Parliamentary Procedure, essay writing and debate about agricultural education topics. They also try to enhance what their members are learning in class during club time by discussing current topics in agricultural education.

The club started the semester with many goals to work towards throughout the year.  So far, members have helped out at CDE Day, hosted by CFFA, by running workshops for parliamentary procedure and prepared public speaking CDEs. The club recently celebrated the first ever PSU National Teach Ag Day, and are currently working on having students participate in the ATA conclave during National Convention in late October.

To celebrate National Teach Ag Day the club hosted a brunch in the ASI building.  About fifteen teachers from across the college came together to enjoy food and company and receive recognition for teaching the wonderful subject of agriculture. Meagan Slates, president of Teach Ag Society, was happy with the first year’s turnout, but hopes more professors will come out to celebrate with the club next fall. Another event hosted by the club on Teach Ag Day was a National Association of Agricultural Educators live webcast party.  During this event, the students indulged in lunch and snacks while following the live twitter feed of the #taglive13 while watching the panel on TV. Students enjoyed connecting with agricultural enthusiasts across the nation through the live feed. It was especially fun when Penn State was recognized nationally for some of their efforts through shout outs from the panel. Lastly, the club sent resources for Teach Ag Day to 160 agricultural programs in Pennsylvania, which included: a lesson plan for Teach Ag Day, a letter thanking the teacher, an invitation to National FFA Convention, a PSU Teach Ag Day poster, a social media postcard, and a link to the YouTube promotional video that a member of Teach Ag! Society created.

The club is continuing to grow and provide their students with resources and fun activities. Upcoming events include Bonfire/social event on November 7th  and NATIONAL CONVENTION during the week of October 30^th where they HOPE TO BRING HOME SOME TROPHIES!

Teach Ag! Society’s mission is to promote the high standards and ideals of agricultural and extension education, to promote a bond between individuals in and those that have an interest in the world of agricultural extension education, to aid in the development of leadership, citizenship, and scholarship, and to cooperate in promoting the interest of the national organizations of Alpha Tau Alpha and Teach Ag!
